A heatwave does not mean that every part of the garden needs the same amount of water. Start with plants that have only a small volume of soil around their roots or are still establishing. Check moisture below the surface, and postpone work that adds further stress.
Heatwave garden care: at a glance
Leaves often droop in afternoon heat even when the soil around the roots is still moist. Before reaching for the hose, ask two questions: which plants have the least water in reserve, and is their soil actually drying out? The answers help you put water where it can prevent lasting damage, rather than merely making the garden look refreshed for an hour.
Local water restrictions, fire-safety rules, weather warnings and product labels always take priority over general garden advice.
- Water first: seed trays, seedlings, hanging baskets, small pots, newly planted trees and shrubs, and crops that are growing or carrying fruit.
- Check: the compost or soil several centimetres down, not just the dry surface.
- Best time: early morning; do not make a severely wilted plant wait if the soil around its roots is genuinely dry.
- Best method: apply water slowly at soil level, then check that it has penetrated.
- Protect: mulch moist soil, move vulnerable pots and combine greenhouse shade with ventilation.
- Postpone: transplanting, hard pruning, heavy feeding, very close mowing and heat-sensitive treatments.
- Usually lower priority: established lawns and mature borders of drought-tolerant plants.
A five-minute watering triage
When time or water is limited, inspect the garden in this order.
This is a priority order, not a timetable. A large pot in light shade may stay moist longer than a shallow bed on sandy soil. Probe each plant's root zone before deciding whether to water.
- Seed trays, seedlings, hanging baskets and small pots. Their roots have little compost to draw from, so sun and wind can dry the whole container quickly. Check them at least once a day during severe heat, and more often when pots are small or exposed.
- Recently planted trees, shrubs, climbers and perennials. Until roots grow beyond the original root ball, the plant depends on a small volume of soil. Test the root ball itself as well as the surrounding ground.
- Vegetables, soft fruit and other productive plants. Tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, beans, leafy salad crops and soft fruit do best with reasonably even moisture. Repeated swings between very dry and saturated soil can reduce growth and spoil crop quality.
- Plants in heat traps or rain shadows. Check under eaves, beside south- and west-facing walls, beneath mature trees, in shallow raised beds, on balconies and next to paving that stores heat.
- Established borders, hedges and lawns. Many well-rooted plants can tolerate a short dry spell. An established cool-season lawn may brown and recover after rain; newly sown grass and recently laid turf are exceptions.
Check below the surface
The soil surface can look dusty while plenty of moisture remains below. In a container, push a finger several centimetres into the compost and learn the difference in weight between a freshly watered pot and one that is nearly dry. In a bed, make a small test hole with a trowel instead of judging by surface colour.
Around a newly planted tree or shrub, test both the original root ball and the soil immediately outside it. A dry root ball can shrink away from the surrounding soil, allowing water to run around it without soaking in. Apply water slowly in two or three passes so the root ball has time to become evenly moist again.
Container compost can behave in the same way when it has dried completely. If water rushes down the inside of the pot and straight out of the drainage holes, pause and water again slowly. A pot with drainage holes can sit briefly in shallow water so the compost can absorb moisture again. Let it drain afterwards, and do not leave the roots standing in water.
Is it heat, drought or too much water?
No single symptom is conclusive, but the plant’s condition in the morning, checked against soil moisture, is much more useful than its afternoon appearance alone.
- Leaves droop in the afternoon but recover by morning — Soil is still moist — Heat response: provide temporary shade or ventilation and avoid automatic extra watering.
- Leaves remain wilted in the morning — Soil is dry below the surface — Drought stress: water slowly and thoroughly.
- Leaves remain wilted or turn yellow — Soil is waterlogged or smells sour — Poor aeration or root trouble: stop watering and check the drainage.
- Pale, bleached or crisp patches are on the sunny side — Soil moisture is adequate — Heat or sun scorch: protect the plant from the strongest sun and wait before pruning.
Water slowly enough to soak in
Early morning is usually the most efficient time to water. Evaporation is lower, and plants begin the hottest part of the day with moisture available. Evening is a practical second choice. However, a severely wilted plant in genuinely dry soil should be watered when you find it rather than left in serious drought stress until the “ideal” hour.
Direct water onto the soil. A watering can, seep hose or a drip system you have checked gives better control than an overhead sprinkler in hot or windy weather. If water runs across the surface, stop, let it soak in and make a second pass. Then dig a small test hole with a trowel. A dark surface does not prove that moisture has reached the roots.
For established plants in open ground, a thorough watering followed by some drying near the surface is usually better than a light daily sprinkle. Seedlings and small pots are different because they have so little soil. Water containers until excess begins to drain, then empty the saucers so the roots are not left standing in water.
A timer is useful, but it cannot detect a blocked emitter, a split tube, a moved hose or rainfall that has already done the job. Watch the system while it runs, check the far end of each line and adjust the duration as weather, soil moisture and plant size change.
Prepare before the hottest day
The day before severe heat is forecast, walk through the vulnerable areas and water dry pots, root balls and beds before plants collapse.
If a container repeatedly dries within hours, the pot, position or compost needs attention—not just the watering schedule. A larger pot, a less exposed position or a more moisture-retentive but still free-draining mix may be the lasting solution.
- Water only where needed. Thoroughly wet dry pots, root balls and productive beds; do not saturate soil that is already moist.
- Mulch moist, weed-free soil. Apply about 5–8 cm of garden compost, leaf mould, composted bark or another suitable material. Keep mulch away from crowns, stems and trunks.
- Move or group small pots. Shift them out of the strongest afternoon sun where practical. Leave enough space for air to circulate and for you to inspect each pot.
- Shade the container as well as the leaves. A dark pot on stone, concrete or decking can become much hotter than the surrounding air.
- Use temporary shade correctly. Suspend shade cloth above vulnerable foliage so air can circulate.
- Ventilate greenhouses fully. Open doors and vents, test automatic openers and make sure hot air has a clear route out. Shade without ventilation can trap heat inside.
Jobs to postpone during extreme heat
During the hottest days, concentrate on water, shade, ventilation and observation. Delay work that disturbs roots or encourages tender new growth:
Remove broken stems or clearly diseased material when necessary, but do not assume every scorched leaf is useless. Partly green foliage may still photosynthesise and shade stems, fruit and younger leaves.
Weeding can reduce competition for water, but work in the cooler part of the day and disturb the soil as little as possible. Your own heat safety matters more than finishing a garden job.
Very hot days and warm nights can also make tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers and courgettes shed flowers or produce less fruit. Heat itself is the problem; extra water will not help when the soil is already moist.
- planting and transplanting;
- hard pruning or removing large amounts of foliage;
- heavy feeding intended to force rapid growth;
- lawn renovation, reseeding and very close mowing;
- routine applications of horticultural oils, soaps or pesticides unless the product label permits use at the forecast temperature.
After the heatwave
Recheck the garden as temperatures fall. A brief thunderstorm may have wet only the surface, while a deeply watered bed may still contain enough moisture several days later. Let the soil guide the next watering instead of continuing the extra daily watering out of habit.
Wait before pruning heat-damaged plants hard. Remove material that is clearly dead, soft or diseased, but give the plant time to reveal which scorched areas remain viable. Resume feeding only after normal growth has restarted and the soil around the roots is evenly moist.
Record the weak points while they are obvious: a pot that is too small, a greenhouse with inadequate ventilation, a young tree whose root ball is difficult to wet, or a bed where water runs off. Correcting one site-specific problem before the next hot spell is more useful than adding another universal watering rule.
Heat stress worsens when roots are disturbed
- Watering every area equally instead of protecting the most vulnerable plants first.
- Giving repeated surface splashes that never reach the roots.
- Treating all afternoon wilting as proof of dry soil.
- Keeping an established lawn green while pots or newly planted plants dry out.
- Shading a greenhouse while leaving its doors and vents closed.
- Continuing to water every day after cooler or wetter weather returns.
